A note on performance and downtime: This morning the Media Temple Grid Cluster 7 was down for about 180 minutes. This is easily the longest outage we’ve experienced with MT in the last three years of using them. Other outages of longer than a minute or three on the Grid Server have been very rare. With shared hosting it’s pretty common to have some downtime but Media Temple has been exemplary compared to past experience with Dreamhost, HostGator, Verve Hosting and other shared solutions.
One stand out in terms of downtime (or rather the lack thereof) is WP Engine. We’ve literally seen a site with no downtime whatsoever for 2+ years with WPE. They charge a premium also but it might be worth it depending on your needs.
